CODING FOR MUMS

This Coding Course for Mums is easier than you think. It is loads of fun and one of the most practical information technology skills you can gain. Whether you are looking to get back into the workplace, to add to your skill set, or you want to take control of your own website – this course will launch you in the right direction.

Do you feel like your schedule is tight, or SCRATCHPAD Centres are too far away? Not a problem, you can learn from home at your own time and at your own pace. The course will be run either in one of our centres or you can do it from home!

Through our innovative Virtual Classrooms we can bring the same SCRATCHPAD Centre learning experience to wherever you are. Our virtual classroom allows you to communicate with the supervisors, view presentations, interact with other participants, ask questions and engage with other resources.

This course uses a unique process, in which concepts and skills are revisited in each session to maximize retention, with a deeper dive into the content each new session to enhance the learning process. We have designed this learning process for you to be able to master coding to the highest level of your ability.

During each session you will work with our range of technology tools at your own pace with the support and encouragement of the supervisors. As a future computer whiz, you will be guided and helped along the way so that by the end of the course you will feel a great sense of accomplishment!

The course uses both online and offline activities, in which you can learn computing concepts both by using a computer and through the use of games and physical objects.

The offline portion provides a fun way of demonstrating the same concepts by manipulating physical objects to model computational concepts.

You are charged with figuring out how to play games as a small group. The minor details of their algorithm, like optimising steps, are unimportant. They are shown how to think logically and progress through the game while using a fixed set of constructs. This helps them with skills for problem solving and logical thinking.

Further, when the games progress through to higher stages, points are provided for optimising steps, and this helps them improve on their previous solutions.

During each session, we will tailor your skills to your level:

• Learn if computer programming, website design, 3D design and printing are right for you
• Write your own games
• Extend Minecraft with mods that you create
• Develop Apps for smart devices
• Development of websites
• Gain important problem solving, logic and computational skills.
• Collaborate with other participants to challenge and learn from each other — enhancing their team building skills.

You are encouraged to work from home where, if in doubt they get assistance from centre supervisors. You can post their questions and queries on our collaboration platform where those get answered by other participants or Centre Supervisors.

Each session lasts for an hour and you can choose to attend only once a week, you can also accelerate your knowledge and attend as many hours as you like. The content of each session builds on the previous one, and allows you to practice various concepts at home.

You can enrol at any time and based on their skill level we provide a number of session timings to choose from. We are open 7 days a week so there is always a session time that will work for you.
